When new patients schedule an appointment for their initial exam, they’re often surprised to hear they’ll be here for two hours. “What exactly are you going to be doing?” I’ve been asked that so often, I’ve decided to make it the topic of today’s blog.

At Koczarski Aesthetic & Laser Dentistry, we believe in providing our patients with the best, most thorough dental care possible. The new patient exam is essentially a “starting point” to precisely assess your oral health, discuss your needs and goals, and work with you to develop a unique treatment plan. Whether you’re looking for cosmetic dentistry or restorations, or just to maintain a healthy smile, this is where it all begins. I’ve prepared a new video that explains the initial new patient exam in more detail.

The new patient exam consists of a comprehensive exam, x-rays, and diagnostic photos, followed by a professional cleaning. Future checkups may not involve all these steps, but if it’s your first time, this is generally how your visit will go.

We start out with a thorough examination of not only your mouth, but your head, face, jaw joints, and neck. If we notice anything unusual, we make a note of it. Then, it’s on to a professional cleaning, as well as a lesson on the proper way to brush and floss. (And it’s not just kids who need it; most adults can use a refresher course.)

Next, we do x-rays using a digital system that cuts down on radiation exposure, followed by detailed photographs of your mouth, teeth, jaw, and face. These images help us with diagnosis and give us a literal picture of you when you started treatment.

Depending on your age or health history, we may also perform additional tests. These include oral cancer screening using the VELscope, which detects abnormalities invisible to the naked eye. We also offer leading-edge genetic testing for oral disease, which requires a simple saliva sample.

After all this, we’ll sit down and talk with you about your exam and what treatment options we recommend. This is the time when you can also discuss your cosmetic concerns and what it will take to achieve your dream smile.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to give us a call.
