To some people, genetic testing sounds like something out of a science fiction novel, but it’s actually one of the most exciting advances in medicine today. Among other things, these types of tests can identify whether a person has an inherited susceptibility to a disease, as well as which treatments will work best on their specific condition.

To help educate you on how these tests work, and what they check for, we’ve created a brand new video.

Three genetic tests relating to oral disease recently became available, and I’m proud to be one of the first dentists in the country to offer them.

The first two, MyPerioPath® and MyPerioID® PST®, aid in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease. It may surprise you to learn that this disease is caused by a common genetic mutation, rather than poor oral hygiene as previously thought.

These tests can tell if you have the mutation and/or which course of treatment will be most effective (for people who test positive or already have gum disease). More detailed information can be found here.

The other test is called OraRiskSM HPV, and it tests for the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is the main cause of oral cancer. The virus, which is also associated with cervical cancer, is spread through sexual contact. This test is very important, so that’s why I am now including it with every comprehensive exam.

These tests, which are offered through OralDNA® Labs, are simple and painless—a saliva sample is all that’s needed—and I recommend them as part of an overall wellness plan.
