Though it doesn’t get much press, oral cancer is actually one of the deadliest types of cancer, often because its early symptoms are hard to recognize.

However, there’s new technology that allows us to identify the earliest signs of oral cancer. It’s called the VELscope®, and it’s the subject of my latest video release.

“VELscope® Oral Cancer Screening” demonstrates this innovative technology, which uses a high-intensity light that illuminates even the tiniest lesions in the mouth. In minutes, we can scan the entire oral cavity and note any abnormal tissue that could be a sign of cancer.

In the video, you’ll see how we perform oral cancer screenings quickly and painlessly, as part of a comprehensive dental exam.

Though the VELscope® has been commercially available since 2006, our practice was lucky enough to be involved in its clinical trials. In fact, our efforts contributed to a recent University of Washington study. In it, the VELscope® system discovered 100 percent of moderate-to-severe dysplasia (abnormalities) compared to only 68 percent in a conventional visual exam.
